Hydroponics
When you’re thinking about how to earn some extra cash, maybe it’s time to look into hydroponics for growing…tomatoes. Right. Growing without soil is a great way to create a closed container for anything you might want to grow, including foods and other plants. To make sure that you’re growing properly and that you’re growing in a way that supports the crop you want to grow, you need to learn the basics. Just diving in is not the best approach to this sort of growing.
What Can You Grow In?
When you’re interested in growing, you need to know what hydroponics means. It does not mean that you need to grow in just water. That wouldn’t be very good for a plant. What this does mean is that you will grow in nutrient infused mediums, and not soil. When you avoid soil, you are able to directly feel your plants the nutrients they need. Soil can act like too much of a buffer, and when you want your plants to grow super tall and big, you need to have nutrients going directly to those roots.
You might want to choose the mediums for your first growing experience:
- Coconut Coir
- Clay balls
- Perlite
You can find these mediums online or through your local hydroponics shop. Check to see what’s the cheapest for you and then go with that. The coco coir tends to be the easiest to grow with, but every person is different. You will just need to talk to the people at the shop to see what they think.
The Problems of Hydroponics
Hydroponics growing often gets you into trouble when you’re talking with others because they might assume you’re growing something that’s not really legal. But that’s not the only problem you might encounter:
- Too many nutrients
- Too few nutrients
- pH problems
- PPM problems
You need to watch a hydroponics grow setup closely at first since this is not a growing medium that will be able to handle itself on its own. You need to make sure that you’re checking and rechecking the system you’ve set up. Since the solution can get out of whack easily, you need to test it. The levels you need to maintain will vary on the plants you’re trying to grow and the nutrients you are using.
When You’re Ready to Grow More
Once you’ve been growing for a while, you need to upgrade your system so that you can handle more. This might mean bigger growing containers and more nutrients. And you might want to use higher quality nutrients and mediums, not just the cheapest ones you can find. Sometimes, it does make sense to spend money on these things.
Hydroponics growing might be just the thing to do when you’re running out of hobbies and unemployment checks. While you might not get a lot of results in your first attempt, this is thought to be the easiest way to grow tomatoes and other foods. And other things.
